Welcome to Big Brothers Big
Sisters of Bath/Brunswick. Since 1981, we have
provided one-to-one mentoring relationships between
adult volunteers and children. Big Brothers Big
Sisters of Bath/Brunswick is an agency affiliated
with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, a national
federation of organizations serving children,
families and communities. Since 1981, we have
provided adult and teen mentors to children,
primarily from single-parent households of low
income, in Brunswick, Harpswell, and Sagadahoc
County. Our programs match children "Littles" with
adult "Bigs," who act as mentors by providing
friendship, support and guidance during the child's
critical childhood and adolescent years. Careful
screening of the "Bigs" is provided by social work
professionals who also supervise, evaluate, and
monitor the matches over time, in order to ensure the
most effective service possible. Studies show that
kids included in ordinary activities with their Bigs,
just a few hours per month, experience significant
improvements in self-esteem, overall behavior and
hope for the future.
In 2010, over 500 children supported by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bath/Brunswick were matched with a caring adult and teen mentor from local communities in Bath, Brunswick and Sagadahoc County. These services were provided in both our Community, as well as our School-based/Other Site-based mentoring programs. Currently there are over 40 children waiting for a Big Brother or Sister. 28 of the 40 children are young boys patiently waiting for a Big Brother!
