Big Brothers / Big Sisters
are adult friends and role models for children who
are in need of additional support and guidance. A
"match" is made with a child based upon the
volunteer's and child's needs, preferences, interests
and hobbies. The program allows some flexibility of
time commitment. Volunteers must meet the following
requirements:
* Eighteen (18) years of age
or older
* A resident of Brunswick,
Harpswell and all of Sagadahoc County, Maine
* Available to participate
in activities with the child on a regular and
consistent basis
* Able to make a minimum one
year commitment once you are matched
* Able to commit to approximately 8 hours a month.
A Couple of Bigs
We also encourage couples or
families to become Bigs. We often see childless
couples enriching their own life in this way or
families for which "one more along" is just fine.
School-Based Mentoring
Program
Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Bath/Brunswick is looking for caring adults and teens
to participate in a school-based mentoring program.
Become a friend to a child who needs your attention!
An hour a week throughout the school year is all it
takes. We'll match you with a child at the school and
give you training and ongoing support during the
school year. To qualify all you need to do is fill
out an application, have a one-on-one interview with
a program coordinator, and attend a training session.
Personal references and background checks are
required for all applicants.
We know it works! A recent study of the school-based mentoring programs shows that 92% of students who participate in the program reported increased self-confidence, 79% improved academic performance and attitudes toward school and 69% demonstrate improved relationships with peers and adults.
