Kayla is a wonderful 7
year old little girl who first started out in
our school-based mentoring program. Kayla was
matched with a Bowdoin College student and
enjoyed her time with her school-based
mentor. Kaylas grandmother recognized
the need for more adult companionship outside
of school and contacted our agency. We began
the community-based enrollment process.
2 months later,
Kayla seemed to have transitioned well into
the community-based mentoring program. A
wonderful woman, Maureen Sullivan, took it
upon herself to join our program in hopes of
helping a young person in need. Maureen was
paired with Kayla in June, 2005. These two,
in many ways, seemed to be a perfect fit.
Maureen is a very
outgoing, active, and experienced individual.
Her friends see her as compassionate, caring,
and insightful. Maureen has raised two
children of her own and her friends and
family felt she would be able to make a
difference in a young persons life.
Maureen wanted to mentor a younger child who
enjoyed the outdoors; however, she was open
to other interests. Kayla has a lot of energy
and was looking for a Big Sister who was
active and enjoyed walks on trails, arts
& crafts, and biking among other
activities. Together, Maureen and Kayla enjoy
their time together every Thursday afternoon
participating in a variety of activities.
Some activities have included biking, hiking,
apple picking, clay play, and the beach.
Maureen is enjoying
her time with Kayla and looks forward to
experiencing many more activities
together.
Kaylas
grandmother could not be happier with the
outcome of this friendship. Kayla is doing
very well in school and always looks forward
to her Thursday afternoon outings with
Maureen. Maureen and Kayla have a friendship
that will last a lifetime.
